Transported, in partnership with artsNK, have been running a new Arts & Health project called Taking pART since January this year. Held in Boston and Spalding Libraries on Thursdays, the first sessions have been really successful, and further sessions are now planned from May to July 2016.
Workshop activities each lasting four weeks have explored ways to be creative with maps and art journals working with paper artist Phiona Richards. Participants are reporting that the sessions are “fabulous” and “calming”. Sessions have grown in size and the atmosphere is incredibly friendly and supportive.
Two new artists, both locally based, have just been commissioned to deliver sessions from May to July. From 5 May, socially engaged artist Katie Smith’s activity “You Know More Than You Think” will unleash your own wisdom. Over the course of four weeks you will work as part of a group to share the words and phrases that motivate you to do great things or just get through each day. Sessions will include collage and stitch. Then, from 2 June, Sue Rowland will be leading silk painting sessions for four weeks using local landmarks as inspiration, finishing with a block of four workshops using weaving techniques to create landscape pictures from 30 June. All sessions are all developed for complete beginners are free and include all materials so no experience is necessary – just curiosity and enthusiasm!
These activities are funded by the Mental Health Promotion Fund through the Managed Care Network and Transported, and are accessible to all members of the community, with a special emphasis to integrate those experiencing mild to moderate mental health issues such as anxiety or depression. Art sessions such as these can really help by lowering stress levels, clearing the mind and creating a sense of calm. Mindfulness is a real buzzword of our times, and focusing on doing something practical provides both a break from your thoughts and encourages creative thinking.
Workshops in Boston Library take place from 10am to 12pm and workshops in Spalding Library take place from 2pm to 4pm on Thursdays. Places are limited and booking is essential, so to book a place please contact Marion Sander on 07887 574138 or email email@example.com.
