Creative Drive: ‘Art on Lorry’ Trailer Visits Local School

Last week Swineshead pupils previewed one of the new Fenland Folk trailers, to spark ideas for ‘Art on Lorries’ competition.

To celebrate the launch of Fenland Folk, the second ‘Art on Lorries’ project, Transported and local haulage company Freshlinc have invited students from Swineshead St Marys Primary School to design their own model lorry inspired by the area.

On Monday 9th January, Transported and Freshlinc  premiered one of their new ‘Art on Lorries’ trailers to Key Stage One pupils from the school. Artist Neil Baker talked the pupils through his design inspired by Donington-born navigator Matthew Flinders, leader of the first circumnavigation of Australia. The pupils also learned about the haulage industry as Ashley Holland, Commercial Manager for Freshlinc demonstrated how lorries work and what they are used for.

Four winning designs from the pupils will be selected by Fenland Folk artists Neil Baker and Steven Hatton of Electric Egg in the next few weeks. The winning designs will be printed onto model lorries, which will be presented to pupils by representatives from Freshlinc, Transported and Electric Egg in a special assembly.

Commissioned by Transported and Freshlinc and designed by artists from Electric Egg, Fenland Folk, draws attention to Boston Borough and South Holland’s famous and lesser known heroes and events, as chosen by Freshlinc employees. From botanist Sir Joseph Banks, to the legend of King John’s treasure, the ten designs are sure to instil awe and curiosity about South Lincolnshire, as they travel around the continent on the side of Freshlinc trailers.  All ten spectacular Fenland Folk lorries will be displayed together for the first time at Springfields Event and Conference Centre on Tuesday 31st January 2017.

Gemma Haines, Teacher at Swineshead St Mary’s Primary School said: “Children in EYFS and Key Stage One at Swineshead St Mary’s Primary loved the visit on Monday. They enjoyed looking around the FreshLinc lorry and learning some exciting facts. Children have been discussing and working hard on their artwork to develop their own designs for a trailer, they have enjoyed finding out more about their local community”

Grace Osbourne, Arts and Marketing Coordinator for Transported said: “Transported and Freshlinc are delighted to work with pupils at St Mary’s Primary School as part of the Fenland Folk project.  Electric Egg’s beautiful designs are a great way to introduce the children to their local heritage. The project is a fantastic opportunity for the students to work with professional artists and learn more about the haulage industry. We look forward to seeing their final designs!”

The public unveiling of the Fenland Folk artworks will take place from 1.30pm to 2.30pm on Tuesday 31st January 2017 at Springfields Event and Conference Centre. Entry is free.
