The ever-popular community lantern making workshops are back!

Every year, during the lead up to the Illuminate parade, we hold free lantern making workshops where our talented team of artists will teach you, the community of Boston, how to create an illuminated artwork that you can bring along and walk with in the procession yourself.

During the weekend of the 18th and 19th November, lead Illuminate artist Ruth Pigott, accompanied by Sarah Taylor, will show you how to create wildlife and bird shaped lanterns for you to take home and you can help to make market-themed wearable props.

The lantern’s shapes will represent different elements of this year’s Illuminate theme which is the Boston T Party Illuminate Parade.

The event is a nod tthe 250th anniversary of the historic Boston Tea Party, but also tTransported, the arts organisation behind the event and much of the public art in the town, and their 10th anniversary. The ‘T’ of the tea party acknowledges the recognizable Transported ‘T’ logo.

Transported is an initiative that has been dedicated to exploring and celebrating the diverse heritage and communities of Boston and South Holland. Planning this year’s Illuminate event has unearthed several key themes that have played a significant role in shaping the region’s identity and history, including:

  • Agriculture, Food & Farming
  • Fish & Maritime Heritage
  • Wildlife, Birds & Migration
  • Diversity, Culture & Language

Places are limited and must be booked in advance.

The sessions last 2 and a half hours each and are open to all ages and abilities. All materials will be provided.

Boston T Party Illuminate Parade is a part of a programme of festive events organised by Boston Borough Council. You can find more details about the rest of the seasonal activities here:
The event is possible thanks to an Arts Council England National Lottery Grant, Transported, Curiosity Creators and Boston Borough Council.

Any under 18s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to both the silk/costume & lantern workshops and the 23rd November Illuminate parade event and supervised at all times. Transported cannot take responsibility for under 18s but rigorous safety precautions and risk assessments will be in place.

Transported is a strategic, community-focused programme which aims to get more people in Boston Borough and South Holland enjoying and participating in arts activities.  The programme is overseen by the Centre of Culture and Creativity at the University of Lincoln, and is funded by the Creative People and Places fund from Arts Council England.
