On Your Doorstop: Sand Casting Workshop

Were you anywhere near the Fenside Community Centre the last weekend of August? If so you may have noticed the opportunity to have a go at a Sand Casting workshop. Artist Martin Heron has been commissioned by Transported to work with the local community to develop ideas on how to improve the Taverner Road Park through an artistic, play themed intervention. He spent three days at the community centre working with anyone who wanted to have a go. They were offered the chance to cast either an object of their own or one Martin provided to create a lasting item. This was done by imprinting the object in sand and then filling it with plaster.

Each participant made two casts, one that they could take home with them and one to go towards the design of the play area. Each participant was also given the opportunity to create a play inspired model from wax to enthuse metal castings at a later date and to draw any ideas they had from colour suggestions to patterns for Martin to use as he progresses through his creative process. All three days, offering a total of six workshops were a success with places being filled by community members from all different walks of life. Watch this space as this project progresses with next steps to be announced at a later date.
