Growing Art

Growing Art is Arts Council England-funded project that will see two professional, socially-engaged artists (Kathleen Smith and Laura Mabbutt) take residence at Willoughby Road Allotments in Boston for 1 year, focusing on helping the allotment and its community to achieve its goals through creative means, demonstrating the value of creative activity within communities.

After discussions with the allotment holders and local residents the artists, Making Up Your Street’s Kathleen & Laura, created list of activities to help achieve the aims of the community. The overall aim is to make the allotment a more welcoming and relaxing place to be for the whole community and invite diverse audiences to take part. As part of the residency they will run free to attend workshops and other creative special events, create signage, trails and murals and aim to bring more people to the site through market stalls and free transport to the site.

They will help allotment holders to personalise the allotment via plot sign making workshops (some of which has already begun) and share the stories of the allotment via a monthly podcast and an augmented reality trail around the allotment telling tales and revealing facts about things growing there.

The residency is expected to conclude in September 2024.
